St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team played a double header against the University of Minnesota – Morris today. The Scots fell in the first game, 10-8, but came back in the second with a 6-1 victory. Macalester is now 3-9 this season.
In game one, the Scots came out swinging. Senior
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit a two-run home run at his first at bat to score himself and fellow senior
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson). Sophomore
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) also scored in the first to give the Scots a 3-0 lead. The Cougars would answer back with two of their own runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2. The second inning belonged to the Scots, who scored three runs in the inning. Junior
Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) singled to right center to score senior
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman). Odom would then hit a double to bring home Hager. Odom would then score off a wild pitch to close out the inning with a 6-2 lead. However, the Cougars had a big third inning, taking the lead 9-6. Minnesota-Morris would put up one more run in the sixth. At the top of the seventh, Macalester started to comeback. First year
Caidan Moore (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) would send Odom and Moreno home, to make the score, 10-8. However, the Cougars held on to the lead and won 10-8.
In game two, the Scots went down 1-0 in the first, but from there it was all Macalester. In the second, junior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) would hit a single and advanced senior
Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) home. Senior
Anushka Fernando (Silver Spring, MD./Wheaton) and Margolis would go home off a single from Moreno. In the third, sophomore
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) singled to center field to plate junior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) to give the Scots a 4-1 lead. First year
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) would send Rodriguez home for Rodriguez's second run of the game. Fernando would hit a single to bring home Mukai, and give the Scots a 6-1 win.
Strong pitching from senior
Will Moscato (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) and juniors
Declan Elias (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius) and
Peter Aspholm (Winthrop, Wash./Liberty Bell) helped lead the Scots to victory. Moscato struck out five batters and only allowed two hits. Elias allowed one hit, and Aspholm let up zero hits.
The Scots' next game will be March 30 at 5:00 p.m. where Macalester will take on University of Northwestern (MN) in St. Paul.
