Tucson, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team competed in its final two games down in Tucson, Ariz. today. The Scots split the games, winning against Kalamazoo, 7-2, in game one, and falling to Concordia Wisconsin in game two, 15-4. The Scots head back to Minnesota with a record of 2-8.
In game one, the Scots took on the Hornets of Kalamazoo College. Macalester started the scoring in the first inning, and never gave up the lead. Sophomore
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) brought home junior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep). Junior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) then singled up the middle to score senior
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Then a single to left field by sophomore
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) advanced Rodriguez home. The Scots led 3-0 after the first. The Hornets would put up one in the second, but Macalester increased their lead back to three in the third. Senior
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) would bring in Odom off a single to left field.
The Hornets would make it 4-2 at the top of the six. However, the Scots weren't done scoring yet. At the bottom of the inning, Moreno would crack one over the fence, plating himself and sophomore
Jack Conner (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional). Macalester would register one more run in the seventh, with Mukai brought home, after Margolis walked with bases loaded. The Scots came out on top 7-2. Strong pitching from junior
Thomas Windels (New York, N.Y./Episcopal) and first year
Cam Scholl (Belmont, Calif./Carlmont) kept the Hornets at bay, combining to strike out 16 batters.
In game two, the Falcons of Concordia Wisconsin came out hot. After five, the Falcons were up 15-0. The Scots never quit and put up runs in the sixth. Senior
Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) hit a double to plate first year
Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Helton would then go home after Odom singled up the middle. First year
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) hit another double for Macalester to score Odom and Rodriguez. The Scots fell 15-4 to the Falcons.
The Scots return home to Minnesota and get back to action on Friday March 25. The Scots will play the University of Minnesota-Morris in a double header at U.S. Bank Stadium at 11:00 a.m.
