Tucson, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team played twice on its seventh day down in Arizona. The Scots fell short against Wesleyan, 17-16, and dropped their game against Carthage, 12-2. The Scots are now 1-6 for the season.
In game one, the Scots played the Cardinals of Wesleyan University. Sophomore
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) smashed a home run in the first inning, scoring himself, senior
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage), and junior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep). First year
Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) singled up the middle to plate junior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School), for a 4-0 lead. Macalester would let up one run at the bottom of the inning but would answer back in the second, with Margolis hitting a sacrifice fly to score senior
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman). The Scots would then go down 6-5, through the fourth.
The fifth was a huge inning for Macalester, scoring nine runs. Two first years,
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and
Caidan Moore (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) opened the inning with solo home runs, putting the Scots back up, 7-6. Palma would hit a single to bring home first year
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto). Palma would score another run, off a hit from Margolis. Then, Odom's double brought home junior
Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) and Margolis, taking an 11-6 lead. Waddell would step up to the plate again in the inning, scoring Odom off a double. Waddell would then score due to Moore reaching first on an error. Wingard would hit a ground rule double to bring home more to finish the top of the fifth up 14-6. However, the Cardinals would rally. Despite Waddell scoring in the seventh and Moore hitting another solo home run, the Scots would fall 17-16 in the ninth.
In game two, the Scots took on Carthage College for the second time this week. The Firebirds came out hot, scoring 11 runs in the first five innings. Sophomore
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) registered a 2-run home run in the sixth, bringing in first year
Evan Burns (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) with him. Carthage would score one more run in the sixth, and the Scots fell to the Firebirds, 12-2, in seven innings.
Moore hit two home runs in game one, totaling three runs in the game. Lincoln went three-for-three scoring a run.
The Scots' next game is Friday March 18 at 2:00 p.m. CDT. Macalester will play Wesleyan University.
