ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team had to win this afternoon in order to make the MIAC Playoffs, in a huge matchup against Gustavus. The Scots pulled through, winning 1-0, claiming the No. 6 seed in the playoffs. The Scots finish the regular season with a record of 8-5-5 (4-4-3 MIAC).
It was a hard-fought battle from the get-go. Junior goalkeeper
Jocelyn Radke (Indianapolis, Ind.) had five saves in the first half to keep Macalester in the game. Up front, the Scots took multiple chances. Junior
Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), sophomore
Mikaely Evans (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South), junior
Mia Brisbin (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads School), and sophomore
Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) took opportunities to shoot. Senior
Lily Lorenzen (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) had her shot saved by the Gusties' keeper to end the first half 0-0.
While Gustavus had the first few shots of the second half, it was Macalester who capitalized on an opportunity in the 59
th minute. Brisbin passed the ball back to Short who smashed it into the corner to give Macalester a 1-0 lead. Senior
Sarah Hamilton (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) had a shot saved by the Gustavus keeper, but the Scots were able to hold on to the lead and claim victory.
Before today's game, the Scots honored their seniors: Hamilton, Lorenzen,
Kate Ellerd (St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy),
Julia Kispert (Atherton, Calif./Menlo-Atherton),
Lucy Grochulska (Henrico, VA./Henrico),
Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah), and
Abby Ecker (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy). The Scots return 23 to the field next season.
The Scots' next game will be the Quarterfinals on Tuesday Nov 1, against the No. 3 seed St. Catherine. The Scots will be on the road with game time set for 2:00 p.m.
