Macalester Clinches No. 6 Seed in the MIAC Playoffs, Defeats Gustavus 1-0 in Regular Season Finale

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team had to win this afternoon in order to make the MIAC Playoffs, in a huge matchup against Gustavus. The Scots pulled through, winning 1-0, claiming the No. 6 seed in the playoffs. The Scots finish the regular season with a record of 8-5-5 (4-4-3 MIAC).

It was a hard-fought battle from the get-go. Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Radke (Indianapolis, Ind.) had five saves in the first half to keep Macalester in the game. Up front, the Scots took multiple chances. Junior Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), sophomore Mikaely Evans (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South), junior Mia Brisbin (Los Angeles, Calif./Crossroads School), and sophomore Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) took opportunities to shoot. Senior Lily Lorenzen (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) had her shot saved by the Gusties' keeper to end the first half 0-0.

While Gustavus had the first few shots of the second half, it was Macalester who capitalized on an opportunity in the 59th minute. Brisbin passed the ball back to Short who smashed it into the corner to give Macalester a 1-0 lead. Senior Sarah Hamilton (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) had a shot saved by the Gustavus keeper, but the Scots were able to hold on to the lead and claim victory.

Before today's game, the Scots honored their seniors: Hamilton, Lorenzen, Kate Ellerd (St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy), Julia Kispert (Atherton, Calif./Menlo-Atherton), Lucy Grochulska (Henrico, VA./Henrico), Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah), and Abby Ecker (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy).
