WINONA, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team traveled to Winona for a MIAC matchup against the Saint Mary's Cardinals. The Scots were able to edge out the Cardinals with a first half goal, and won 1-0. Macalester's record is now 8-4-3 (7-1-1 MIAC).
Macalester proved to be a force to be reckoned with from the first whistle. The Scots maintained possession in their attacking half, with multiple shots from senior
Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem), junior
Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep), and senior
Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker). Finally, in the 36
th minute, the Scots were able to break through. Sophomore
Grant Luce (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) put the ball into the back of the net and was assisted by sophomore
Ian Staresinic (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and first year
Alex Beck-Ruiz (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd).
In the second half, Macalester continued to push forward and create chances. Dono, Stern, senior
Milosz Fernandez-Kepka (Las Vegas, Nev./Indiana University HS), and junior
Zade Alafranji (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento Waldorf School/Davis Legacy) all forced the Cardinals keeper to make saves in the second half. Macalester's defense also only allowed the Cardinals to have two shots off target in the second half, out shooting Saint Mary's 19-5. The Scots won 1-0.
Macalester is poised to play for the regular season MIAC Championship title on Saturday Oct 29. The game is set for 3:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium against Gustavus Adolphus.
