Men's Soccer: Macalester Goes into the MIAC Playoffs as the No. 3 Seed after Close Final Regular Season Clash with Gustavus

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team hosted Gustavus Adolphus this afternoon in a big matchup. The Scots never gave up, but fell 1-0 to the Gusties. With this result, the Scots finish tied for second in the MIAC regular season standings with a record of 8-5-3 (7-2-1 MIAC).
 
Right out the gate, senior Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) took a chance at net. Fellow seniors Milosz Fernandez-Kepka (Las Vegas, Nev./Indiana University HS) and Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) also challenged the Gusties, with Dono forcing a save from the Gusties' keeper. First year Milo Clarkson (Hood River, Ore./Hood River Valley) took a free kick for Macalester that was just kept out of the net by the Gustavus goalkeeper in the 28th minute. Yet the game remained scoreless after 45.
 
In the second half, sophomore goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made a quick save less than a minute after the whistle. The Scots continued to fight, but it was Gustavus who went up 1-0 in the 67th minute. The Scots continued to press for a goal, but the Scots weren't able to overcome the deficit and fell 1-0. With the win, Gustavus won the MIAC Championship regular season title.
 
Before today's game, the Scots honored its seniors as part of Senior Day: Dono, Stern, Fernandez-Kepka, Mitchell Kastilahn (New Milford, Conn./New Milford), Nolan Meyer (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), Jacob Kresnicka (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), and Ryan Davies (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt). The Scots bring back 23 athletes next season.
 
As the No. 3 seed, the Scots will host No. 6 Saint John's on Tuesday Nov 1 at Macalester Stadium. Kickoff is at 2:00 p.m.
