Men’s Swimming & Diving: Macalester Opens Season vs. Luther

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's swimming & diving team kicked off the 2022-23 season with a dual meet against Luther College on Saturday at Riley Pool. The Scots won three individual events and a relay but lost the dual, 141-88.

Sophomore Charles Batsaikhan (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia/East Chapel Hill) posted two of Macalester's individual victories, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.59 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.12. First year Casey Meretta (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.78. First year TJ Palli (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was second in both the 50 free (22.83) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.89).

Others taking second place in the swimming events were first years Kynan DeSouza-Chen (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) in the 100-yard butterfly (55.44) and Will St. John (McGaheysville, Va./East Rockingham) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.88). Sophomore Ryan McNeff (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) turned in a pair of strong swims to take third in the 200 IM (2:14.53) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:26.96). Also taking third were St. John in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.58), sophomore Isaac Kisker (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) in the 100-yard butterfly (59.31), and first year Alec Chen (Edina, Minn./Edina) in the 100-yard freestyle (52.00).

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Palli, sophomore Adrian Aguilar (Oakland, Calif./St. Joseph's Notre Dame), DeSouza-Chen and Meretta closed out the meet with a victory with a time of 1:32.11. The 200-yard medley relay team of Meretta, Batsaikhan, DeSouza-Chen and Kisker finished second in 1:41.15.

In the 1-meter diving event, first year Dylan Herlihy (Reading, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) finished in second place with 158.05 points.

Macalester hosts Saint John's University next Saturday, Oct. 29 in another dual meet. The meet starts at 1:00 p.m. at Riley Pool.
