COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team traveled to Collegeville to compete in a MIAC contest against Saint John's. After a scoreless first half, the Scots broke through and won the match 2-1. Macalester improves to 7-4-3 (6-1-1 MIAC).
The Scots put the pressure on early registering multiple corners and offensive chances. Junior
Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) hit the post while senior
Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) and sophomore
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) forced the Johnnies' keeper to make multiple saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The second half started, and the Scots picked up right where they left off. Macalester earned a penalty kick in the 49
th minute and Sciortino slotted it past the keeper and went up 1-0. Haenicke had another shot saved just after the goal and kept up the offensive attack. In the 53
rd minute, senior
Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) assisted Sciortino in his second goal of the game, to double Macalester's lead. The Johnnies would score in the 79
th minute, but the Scots were able to keep the lead and win 2-1. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made six saves today in the win.
Macalester's next game will be Wednesday Oct. 26 at 4:00 p.m. The Scots will travel to Winona, to take on Saint Mary's.
