Men’s Soccer: Scots are Victorious Over Carleton, Led by Dono

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team played an important MIAC matchup today against Carleton. The game was close the whole 90 minutes, but the Scots were victorious, 3-0 over the Knights. The Scots are now 6-4-3 (5-1-1 MIAC).

Both teams found their footing on the slick turf in the first few minutes. The Knights were denied a goal by sophomore goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech). Just a few minutes later, in the 10th minute, the Scots took the lead. After a Macalester tackle, the ball popped out towards Carleton's net and senior Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) picked it up and blasted the ball into the top of the net. Junior Branko Sciortino (Los Altos, Calif./Bellermine College Prep) and sophomores Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy), Ian Staresinic (Middleton, Wis./Middleton), and Julian Evans (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) created more offensive chances for Macalester Scots held on to a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Dono scored his second goal of the game and doubled Macalester's lead. The Scots were awarded a penalty kick in the 61st minute and the senior buried the ball into the bottom right corner, sending the Knights' keeper the other way. Haenicke tacked on to the Scots' lead in the 79th minute. Senior Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) passed it to Sciortino whose low cross to Haenicke was smashed into the net. The Scots shutout the Knights and walked away with the victory.

Macalester's next game will be Saturday Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. The Scots will travel to Collegeville, to take on Saint John's.
