Volleyball: Macalester Drops Non-Conference Match to UW-Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Macalester College volleyball team fell to UW-Stout in three sets, 25-22, 25-8, 25-20 in a non-conference road game Tuesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Scots are now 12-8 on the season, while the Blue Devils of the WIAC improve to 11-10.

Macalester kept it close in the first set before falling, 25-22. Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) tallied five kills and sophomore right side Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen) had four kills in the set. The offense struggled in the second set, as the Scots managed just one kill in a 25-8 loss. In the third set, Macalester led by as many as four points early before UW-Stout came back to tie the score at 16-16. After a Blue Devil attack error put the Scots up 17-16, the hosts scored the next six points and never looked back, winning 25-20.

Macalester was limited to its lowest offensive totals of the season in kills (16), assists (15) and hitting percentage (-.056). Geber finished with six kills and Wooten had five kills. First year setter Maya Mortenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) recorded 10 assists. Sophomore libero Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) paced the defense with 10 digs. Sidney Hoverman led UW-Stout with 10 kills.

The Scots return to conference play with a home match against No. 18 Augsburg on Friday, Oct. 14. The MIAC match begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center. Macalester will celebrate its volleyball alumni at the match.
