Men’s Soccer: Scots Dominate St. Scholastica in Conference Matchup

DULUTH, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team improved to 5-4-3 (4-1-1 MIAC) this evening with a conference victory over St. Scholastica. The Scots traveled to Duluth, and shutout the Saints in the 4-0 win.

The Scots started out strong, maintaining control of the ball in their offensive half. Senior Milosz Fernandez-Kepka (Las Vegas, Nev./Indiana University HS) was rewarded early, scoring in the eighth minute to give the Scots the lead. The Saints looked to answer back quickly after Macalester's goal, but sophomore goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made a save to keep the lead. Senior Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) quickly doubled the lead, putting the ball into the back of the net in the 13th minute. The Scots kept control of the game, and senior Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) scored his first goal of the season just before halftime, for a 3-0 Macalester lead at the whistle. Stern was assisted by fellow senior Jacob Kresnicka (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and first year Parker Etzbach (Danbury, Conn./Wooster School).

In the second half, sophomore Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) continued to press up top for the Scots and create multiple chances, while Price and the Macalester defense denied the Saints the opportunity to get back in the game. To finish off the night, Stern scored the Scots' fourth and final goal in the 87th minute, assisted by sophomore Ian Staresinic (Middleton, Wis./Middleton). Macalester kept the shutout, and won 4-0.

Macalester's next game will be Friday Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The Scots will host Carleton at Macalester Stadium.
