St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its 11
th game of the season against Augsburg this afternoon. The Auggies overtook the Scots 69-55. The Scots are now 5-6 (3-5 MIAC).
Senior guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) made her presence known in the first two minutes, hitting two threes to put the Scots ahead by two. She would go on to make 11 of the Scots' points in the quarter. However, the Auggies would go on a 13-2 run to bring the score to 17-8 in favor of the Auggies, giving them their largest lead of the half, nine. The Scots battled back to get within four, 19-15 at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw first year guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) keep the Scots within four, 19-23 with 5:56 left in the half. The rest of the quarter was a back-and-forth battle. A last-minute layup from junior forward
Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) put the Scots within five, going down, 33-28, into the break.
First year guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep), Starks, and LaFrenz would each put up points at the beginning of the third to close Augsburg's lead to two points with 7:40 on the clock. Yet the Auggies would answer back with two three-pointers of their own to increase their lead back to eight, 42-34. The Scots would close the gap back to two, twice more in the quarter, and a last second free throw from Sabbagh kept the game within one possession, 46-43, in favor of the Auggies.
The Scots kept up the fight in the final ten minutes. Starks opened the scoring, bringing the Scots within one. The Auggies wouldn't relinquish their lead, and went on an 8-2 run to go up 55-47 with 5:57 on the clock. Despite the Scots determination, they couldn't overcome the Auggies lead and were defeated 69-55.
Sabbagh led the team with 20 points on the night. Starks was right behind with 18 points and earned her first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. LaFrenz led the team with 12 rebounds.
Macalester's next game is Monday, Jan 10. The Scots will play St. Catherine's in a MIAC matchup. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
