St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its 12
th game of the season, taking on St. Catherine. The Scots came out on top with a 68-59 victory. The Scots are now 6-6 (4-5 MIAC).
The Wildcats were the first to put points up on the board, but sophomore guard
Maia Pedrosa (South San Francisco, Calif./ Urban School of San Francisco), quickly answered back with a three-pointer. The Wildcats would take an 8-2 run for the next few minutes, going up 10-4, with 6:55 on the clock. Again, Pedrosa answered back with a three. Senior guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) would put in a layup to get within one, but the Wildcats pulled ahead, ending the first quarter with a 17-13 lead over the Scots.
With an and-one from first year guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) and a three-pointer from Sabbagh, the Scots tied the game at 19 with 8:29 in the half. The Wildcats and Scots would continue to go back-and-forth scoring, until the Scots were able to take the lead, 28-27 off a three-pointer from first year guard
Jessica Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis), with 2:20 on the clock. Yet the Wildcats would take a 31-30 lead into the break.
The Scots wasted no time after the break, going on a 7-1 run for the first three minutes of the half, including another three from Pedrosa. Starks, C. Sabbagh, and first year guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) would tally more baskets for the Scots, giving themselves their largest lead of the quarter (11), 46-35, with 3:01 on the clock. The Scots didn't relinquish their lead and ended the quarter on top, 48-41.
In the final ten minutes, the Scots could not be beaten. Although the Wildcats came within two points, with 7:44 on the clock, they could not overtake Macalester. C. Sabbagh would score 10 points in the quarter while Starks would tally six. Macalester defeated St. Catherine 68-59.
C. Sabbagh (22) and Starks (21) both set season highs and led the team in points tonight. The Scots went 7-for-15 on three pointers and registered a 49.1 field goal percentage.
Macalester's next game is Wednesday, Jan 12. The Scots will play Hamline at 7:00 p.m.
