Women’s Basketball: Dominating Second Half Sends Scots Over the Pipers

St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its 13th game of the season, competing against MIAC opponent, Hamline. The Scots were victorious, beating the Pipers 75-60. The Scots are now 7-6 (5-5 MIAC).

The Pipers got out to an early 4-0 lead, but sophomore guard Maia Pedrosa (South San Francisco, Calif./ Urban School of San Francisco), quickly answered back with a three-pointer. Hamline would make seven unanswered points before sophomore guard Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) would make a layup for the Scots, bringing the score to 11-5 with 3:36 left in the quarter. Two three-pointers from the Pipers were too much to overcome in the final minutes of the quarter, and the Scots ended the first quarter down 17-8.

Pedrosa again put the first points of the quarter on the board for Macalester, making an and-one, closing the Pipers lead to six. However, the Pipers would go on a 13-4 run, and give themselves a 15-point lead, their largest of the quarter, 30-15. Macalester would not back down and continued to battle back. With 4:41 remaining in the quarter, first year guard/forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) would start the Scots' 14-3 rally. Sophomore guard Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./ North Andover) came up big off the bench, putting up a three-pointer and a layup during the rally. A layup by junior forward Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) in the last thirty second put the Scots within four, 29-33 at halftime.

The Scots took the third quarter by storm. After an 8-6 run for the Scots, the Pipers would put up a three, to make the score 42-37 in favor of Hamline. However, Pedrosa would again step up for the Scots and put down a three of her own. Her three-pointer started a 13-0 run for the Scots, seeing Macalester on top, 50-42, with 3:20 left in the quarter. By the end of the quarter, the Scots had increased their lead to twelve points, five of which again came from Panos. The Scot headed into the final quarter with a 60-48 lead.

First year guard/forward Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) set the tone for the final quarter, making a layup in the first 16 seconds. The Pipers went on a 6-0 run after that, but senior guard Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) shut that down, putting up another three-pointer for the Scots. The last six minutes were dominated by the Scots and they won the game 75-60

Starks led the team with 15 points and 14 rebounds, earning her second double-double of the season. LaFrenz added another double-double to her tally for the season, making 14 points and 13 rebounds. Sabbagh, Pedrosa, and Panos also put-up double digits in the win. Macalester made 50.8% of their field goal attempts on the night.

Macalester's next game is Saturday, Jan 15. The Scots will host Bethel at 1:00 p.m.
