Women’s Basketball: Scots Outscored by Bethel

St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its third game of the week this afternoon against Bethel, in a MIAC matchup. The Royals outscored the Scots 73-48. Macalester is now 7-7 (5-6 MIAC).

The Scots started the game answering the Royals' opening layup with a pair of free throws from
first year guard/forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep). However, the Royals would build momentum the rest of the half, outscoring the Scots 18-10 the rest of the quarter. Despite six points made by first year guard/forward Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School), the Royals took a 20-12 lead into the second quarter.

The Royals would continue their precise shooting, knocking down a three with 8:46 on the clock and going on a 15-10 run for the next five minutes. Junior forward Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) capitalized on an and-one to put the Scots within 13, 35-22 with 4:09 on the clock. Bethel would not give up the lead however, outscoring the Scots in the last for minutes for a halftime lead of 41-24.

The third quarter opened with Bethel's Haley Glander scoring her 20th point of the game. Sophomore guard Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) would counter with a jumper of her own, and a made free throw. The Royals however held the Scots to only six points in the third quarter, creating an even larger lead of 56-30. The Scots never gave up, and Palmen started the fourth quarter with five points for the Scots, including the Scots' first three-pointer of the game. Palmen would make another two points in the quarter, while LaFrenz would add six. Yet the Scots' rally wasn't enough to overcome Bethel's lead, and Macalester fell 73-48.

Palmen led the Scots with 12 points, LaFrenz and Starks were right behind her with 11 and 10 points respectively. LaFrenz led the team in rebounds with nine and three blocks.

Macalester's next opponent will be St. Olaf on Wednesday, January 19. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
