Men’s Basketball: Macalester Falls to First-Place Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team was defeated by conference-leading Augsburg University, 92-55 Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. The Scots are now 4-8 overall and 1-7 in conference play, while the Auggies (10-2) remain unbeaten in the MIAC at 7-0.

Macalester started the game well with a 12-6 run over the first six minutes. Senior guard Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) tallied eight points and senior center Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) added four points in the run for the Scots. After Augsburg battled back to take a 17-16 edge, a basket by sophomore Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) put Macalester on top, 18-17 with nine minutes left in the half. That was the last lead the Scots would enjoy, as the Auggies registered the next 12 points and never looked back, taking a 43-29 lead at the half.

Momentum stayed with the hosts, as Augsburg opened the second half with 11 straight points to lead, 54-29. Macalester, thanks to a three-pointer by sophomore guard Tom Andreae (Newton, Mass./Newton North), came as close as 22 points in the second half, as the Auggies ran away with the win. Augsburg shot the ball well all game, making 53.1 percent from the field compared to 31.7 percent for the Scots.

Ramos led Macalester with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. First year forward Badou Ba (Dakar, Senegal/Williston Northampton) came off the bench to record career highs of nine points and six rebounds. Matt Carik and Jack Sorenson each scored 12 points to lead Augsburg.

The Scots return home to host Hamline on Wednesday, Jan. 12. The MIAC game starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
