ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a MIAC game at home to Hamline University, 71-62 Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. With the loss, the Scots are now 4-9 overall and 1-7 in the conference, while the Pipers improve to 6-8, 4-5 MIAC.
Four points by sophomore guard
Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose), including a dunk on the Scots' first possession, helped Macalester open the game with a 9-2 run. A basket by first year forward
Badou Ba (Dakar, Senegal/Williston Northampton) pushed the lead to 13-4 with 13:10 on the clock in the first half. With the Scots leading by seven midway through the first half, Hamline used a 9-2 run of its own to tie the score at 21-21 at the 7:31 mark. Robert Grace IV (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) put Macalester ahead, 24-21, the Pipers closed out the half with a 9-4 spree to take a 30-28 advantage into the break.
The Scots started hot in the second half, with first year guard
Coby Gold (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) tallying a conventional three-point play and senior guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) draining a three for a 34-30 lead. The game went back and forth over the next nine minutes, with five lead changes and six ties, including 44-44 following a basket by senior guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) with 8:29 remaining. A layup and free throw from Cooper Berg sparked a key 14-4 run to give Hamline its biggest lead to that point, 58-48 with five minutes left. The Scots were unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way, as the Pipers wrapped up the win.
Hamline made nine threes compared to three for Macalester while shooting 47.7 percent from the field overall and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. The Scots, who made 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) from the floor for the game, were led by Ramos with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Sathy finished with a season-best 13 points, and Williams recorded 12 points and six rebounds. Gold contributed nine points, five boards and three steals, while Anderson registered nine points and six rebounds. Berg led all scorers with 32 points to go with nine rebounds for the Pipers.
Macalester hosts another MIAC contest as Bethel University visits the Leonard Center on Saturday, Jan. 15. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in St. Paul.
