St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its 17
th game of the season, hosting Concordia in a MIAC matchup. The Scots battled until the end, but ultimately fell to the Cobbers, 67-58. The Scots are now 8-9 (6-8 MIAC).
The Cobbers started the game going up 6-2. Junior guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) however would drop a three with 4:54 on the clock to bring the Scots within one. Concordia would then go on a 9-4 run to give themselves their biggest lead of the half, 15-9, with 2:20 left. The Scots weren't deterred, and Cushing sank another three for Macalester. Senior guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) would then put up seven points for the Scots to tie the game at 19 at the end of the first.
First year guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) started the Scots off in the second quarter with a layup. After the Cobbers answered back with a three-pointer, the Scots went on a 14-7 run, including knocking down two threes, one from Sabbagh and one from sophomore
Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./North Andover). The Scots would score four more points in the quarter and take a 39-33 lead into the break.
The second half proved to be a tough battle for the Scots. Sabbagh was the lone scorer for the Scots in the third with six points. Macalester was down by one, 46-45, going into the final 10 minutes. The fourth quarter saw both teams play great defensively. Cushing would knock down three threes for Macalester, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Cobbers. The Scots fell 67-58.
Sabbagh led the team with 20 points. Cushing would follow suit, knocking down five threes on the night, registering 15 points and four assists. Macalester tallied a 40% field-goal percentage.
Macalester's next game is Saturday, Jan 29. The Scots will host Gustavus in a MIAC matchup. Tipoff is at 1:00 p.m.
