Women’s Basketball: Scots Drop Game Against Gusties

St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played its 18th game of the season, hosting Gustavus in a MIAC matchup. The Gusties took an early lead, and maintained it through the game, winning 70-41. The Scots are now 8-10 (6-9 MIAC).
 
The Gusties got out to a quick lead, going up 4-0. First year guard/forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) would make the first points for the Scots with 5:18 on the clock. However, the Gusties would go on a 15-3 run to close the quarter out 19-5 over Macalester.
 
Senior guard Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) would start the Scots off strong in the second quarter with a three-pointer, reducing the Gusties lead to 11. Gustavus would increase their lead to 19, going up 31-12 at the 4:22 mark. The Scots never quit, and went on a run of their own, 10-2, including three points from Sabbagh and five points from junior guard Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South), who knocked down another three for the Scots this quarter. Gustavus would put up a three of their own and knock down a pair of free throws in the last seconds of the half to end the half up 38-22.
 
In the third, first year guard/forward Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) would go 4-4 on free throws in the third while sophomore guard Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) made 1-of-2. The Gusties would take a 30-point lead, 57-27 into the fourth. In the fourth, the Scots outscored the Gusties 14-13. Gustavus would drop a three to start the quarter. Cushing would lead the Scots in the quarter with five points, including knocking down another three. Sophomore Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) would make a three of her own in the final 10 minutes, while first years Jessica Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) and Jada Northover (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University High School) put up field goals for the Scots off the bench. Gustavus would take the game, 70-41.
 
Sabbagh led the team with 11 points and two assists. Cushing went on to score 10 for the Scots. Junior forward Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) and first year guard/forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) led the team with seven rebounds apiece.
 
Macalester's next game is Wednesday, February 2. The Scots travel to Northfield to take on Carleton at 7:00 p.m.
