ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team wrapped up play at the Macalester Invitational with a five-set victory over Buena Vista on Saturday in the Leonard Center. The Scots, who fell to Coe earlier in the day, went 2-2 over the two-day event.
Against Buena Vista, the Scots dropped the first set, 26-16 but overcame the slow start to win the next two sets, 25-16 and 25-20. Macalester put away a total of 24 kills in those two sets, including seven apiece by first years
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and
Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo). In the fourth set, the Beavers bounced back to win, 25-20 and force a fifth set. The Scots dominated the deciding stanza, holding Buena Vista to one kill and a -.273 hitting percentage while recording nine kills to win the set, 15-5 and take the match.
Junior
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) led all players with a career-high 21 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. She also led the defense with 20 digs. Preston notched 16 kills and 11 digs, while Geber finished with eight kills. First year setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) delivered 53 assists on the Scots' 57 kills in the match.
In Macalester's first match of the day, Coe played three strong sets to defeat the Scots, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19. Macalester was able to tally eight kills apiece in the first and third sets but were unable to catch the Kohawks in either set. Preston was the Scots' leader on offense, tallying 11 kills against just two errors in 32 attempts. Geber added six kills and two blocks, while first year setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) registered 23 assists to go with 12 digs. Defensively, junior
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) and first year
Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) each had 17 digs.
Next up for Macalester is a non-conference game at home against Martin Luther on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The first serve goes up at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
