Men’s Tennis: Macalester Falls at Gustavus in MIAC Playoffs

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 6-0 loss to top-seeded Gustavus in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs Thursday afternoon at Brown Tennis Courts. The fourth-seeded Scots finish the 2021 campaign with a 7-4 record, while the Gusties advance to the MIAC finals with a record of 15-2.

Macalester's No. 2 doubles team of senior Aidan Toner-Rodgers (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) and sophomore Matthew Sullivan (Tacoma, Wash./Weil) almost prevented a Gustavus sweep of the doubles before losing their match, 8-6. The Gusties then picked up straight-set wins at third and fifth singles to wrap up the win.

Toner-Rodgers and Sullivan finished second on the team in doubles victories with a 6-4 record behind juniors Jeffrey Jorgensen (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and Alexander Poland (Madison, Wis./Madison West), who were 7-3. Jorgensen and senior Sam Hochberger (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) each posted singles records of 8-1 to lead the Scots.

The loss to Gustavus marked the final competition in the Orange and Blue for seniors Hochberger, Toner-Rodgers and Ben White (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South).
