Macalester Earns No. 4 Playoff Seed After 5-4 Win Over Saint John’s University

Collegeville, Minn.- The Macalester College men's tennis team defeated conference foe Saint John's University on the road in a pivotal final game of the regular season. The Scots fought to a 5-4 win to end the regular season on a high note. Macalester finishes the 2021 spring season with a record of 6-3 (6-3 MIAC) and the no. 4 seed while SJU falls to 6-5 (4-5 MIAC) and misses the playoffs.

The Scots only grabbed one doubles win. No. 3 slotted juniors Jeffrey Jorgensen (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and Alexander Poland (Madison, Wis./Maison West) won their doubles match by a score of 8-5 that would ultimately help the Scots prevail.

Senior Sam Hochberger (Maple Grove, Minn./ Maple Grove) won his thrilling match from the no. 1 slot by taking the third set. All three sets went back and forth but Hochberger took set one 6-2, lost set two 7-5, and won set three by a score of 10-7.

Jorgensen also went back and forth with his opponent before taking set three in dominant fashion. The no. 2 slotted Scot won set one by a score of 6-2, lost set two by a score of 6-3, and only allowed one point in the third set with a 10-1 win.

Senior Ben White (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South) won his match in two sets from the no. 4 position. White won both sets by a score of 6-3. Poland also won his match in two straight sets in the no. 6 position. Poland won set one by a score of 6-3 and won set two by a score of 6-2.

No. 4 seeded Macalester will face off with Bethel University at home on Tuesday, May 4 at 3:30 pm. Macalester and Bethel faced off earlier this year with the Scots taking the 6-3 victory on the road.
