ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College football team wrapped up its 2021 spring schedule with a scrimmage against Bethel University Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots played an abbreviated schedule this spring that included an intrasquad, Orange-White game last Saturday.
Bethel scored a pair of touchdowns near the end of the first quarter, and another touchdown at the end of the second quarter. Macalester's defense tightened up in the second half, shutting down the Royals and forcing a punt on every possession. The Scots had some impressive drives that stalled in Bethel territory, with their lone points coming on a safety after an errant snap went over the punter's head in through the end zone. The game ended with the score 21-2.
Highlights on offense included a 50-yard pass from junior quarterback
Grady Munro (Calgary, Alberta/Springbank Community) to junior receiver
Peter Vitalis (Shafer, Minn./Chisago Lakes). First year receiver
Nathan Wu (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) caught a 33-yard pass from first year quarterback
Marshall Lastes (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) in the third quarter. First year running back
Logan Pampel (Johnson Creek, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran School) had several impressive runs, including a 14-yard run in the third quarter.
The scrimmage served as a precursor to Macalester's return to the MIAC in the fall of 2021. The Scots and Royals are both in the Skyline Division and will face each other in a regular-season game on Oct. 23 in Arden Hills.
Macalester graduates eight seniors, who were honored before last week's Orange-White game.
