MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team swept a MIAC doubleheader from Augsburg on the road, winning 7-5 and 3-1 Thursday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field. The wins are the fourth and fifth victories in a row for the Scots, who are now 5-3 overall and in the MIAC. The Auggies fall to 3-17, 0-8 MIAC.
Macalester set the tone early in the first game. After senior
Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) plated senior
Olive Tambou (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) with a grounder in the top of the second inning, the Scots scored five runs in the top of the third for a 6-0 lead. Sophomore
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) hit a two-run triple and later scored on a single by senior
Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove). Kechely and sophomore
Gabriella Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./The Galloway School) also drove in runs in the third.
Augsburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Then in the top of the sixth, first year
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) doubled to bring home junior
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) for a 7-2 advantage. The Auggies made things interesting down the stretch, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a two-run game, 7-5. But first year
Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) retired the final batter on a groundout to end the game.
First year pitcher
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits in three innings of work. Brodine delivered three hits, two runs batted in and a run, while Kechely, Meade and Katzin each had two hits.
In the second game, the score remained 0-0 until the top of the fourth inning. Brodine, Meade, senior
Anya Lindell Paulson (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) and Kechely all singled to open the fourth, with Brodine and Meade scoring on Kechely's hit. A grounder by first year
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) plated Lindell Paulson for a 3-0 lead. Augsburg scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 3-1, then threatened in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on second and third and two out, sophomore
Joia Simonson (Pardeeville, Wis./Portage) induced a groundout to wrap up the win.
Simonson pitched all seven innings, giving up one run on five hits while walking four and striking out five to improve to 4-2 on the season. Meade registered a pair of hits in the win.
Macalester plays another MIAC twinbill on the road, as the Scots travel to Moorhead to take on Concordia on Saturday, April 17. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
