Softball: Solid Pitching Helps Macalester Sweep Saint Mary’s

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College pitching allowed just two runs on eight hits as the Scots took two from Saint Mary's University, 7-2 and 2-0 in a MIAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Macalester Softball Complex. Macalester improves to 3-3 overall and in the MIAC, while the Cardinals drop to 5-13, 2-4 MIAC.

In the first game, the Scots struck for four runs in the second inning. Senior Anya Lindell Paulson (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) hit a two-run double, while senior Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) and first year Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) recorded RBI singles. After Saint Mary's scored a run in the top of the third, junior Anna Leidner (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) came home from second base on an error for a 5-1 lead. Another run by Saint Mary's in the sixth made it 5-2 before junior Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) and first year Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) drove in runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-2 Scots.

Sophomore Joia Simonson (Pardeeville, Wis./Portage) started in the circle and gave up a run on two hits over five innings of work to earn the win. First year Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) pitched the final two innings and allowed a run on two hits. Lindell Paulson went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, while Kechely added two hits.

Simonson shined in Game 2, tossing a complete-game shutout. She blanked the Cardinals on four hits while fanning five and walking two in seven innings to improve to 3-2 on the season. Senior Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) drove in a run in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly that plated Clarke, who led off the inning with a double. Then in the fifth, Kechely singled to score Katzin for an insurance run. Along with her pitching dominance, Simonson also went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Katzin also had two hits.

Prior to the game, the Scots honored their seniors Lindell Paulson, Kechely, Meade, Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) and Olive Tambou (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) as a part of Senior Day.

Next up for Macalester is a MIAC doubleheader at Augsburg on Thursday, April 15. The first game starts at 3:30 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn.
