Women's Basketball: Scots Complete Series Sweep of St. Kate's in OT Thriller Win
 
ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team took down St. Kate's in overtime by a score of 73-64. The Scots are now 2-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
 
The Scots offense poured in 73 points on 43.3 percent shooting as a team. Macalester played a very physical game, scoring 46 points in the paint. Four Scots scored in double digits on the Sunday afternoon contest. Junior guard Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) led both teams in scoring with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Sabbagh also grabbed seven rebounds and tallied three steals on defense.
 
Senior guard Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard Westlake) and senior forward Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) added 13 points. Barraza also tallied two assists and Podoll crashed the boards for seven rebounds. Senior guard Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tampalpais) also contributed 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
 
Brooke Torvik led the Wildcats with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Bree Glynn recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kassidy Jenkins also tallied 10 points on the day.
 
After the Wildcats jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the Scots, Sabbagh drained a jump shot to make the score 11-6. St. Kate's remained in control of the first quarter. A layup from Sowerby made the score 15-14 but the Wildcats carried a 16-14 lead into the second quarter.
 
St. Kate's started the second quarter by going on a 9-0 run. Sowerby broke the run by knocking down a three-pointer to make the score 23-17 in favor of the Wildcats. St. Kate's led by as much as 12 points in the second quarter. Macalester trailed 35-24 going into halftime.
 
The Wildcats controlled much of the third quarter, leading by as much as 16 at one point. The Scots continued to fight but took a 55-44 deficit into the fourth quarter.
 
After St. Kate's jumped out to a 58-44 lead, Macalester went to work by quickly chipping away. The Scots played stout defense during the fourth quarter. Macalester held the Wildcats to five points over the course of the fourth quarter. Sabbagh went off in the fourth quarter scoring 10 of the 16 points recorded by the Scots. After knotting the game up at 60, the Scots and Wildcats went into overtime.
 
13 overtime points helped the Scots secure a 73-64 victory over the Wildcats.
 
Macalester will be back in action against St. Olaf on March 28. The Scots and Oles will tip-off at 3:00 pm in Northfield, Minn.
