St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team defeated St. Olaf to remain perfect on the 2021 spring season. The Scots dominated the night and even led by as many as 18 points before winning 63-56 over the Olies. Macalester is now 3-0 while St. Olaf falls to 0-2 on the season.
Senior guard
Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard Westlake) led the Scots offensively with 17 points and seven assists on the night. Senior forward
Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) also added 15 points and six rebounds. Senior forward
Kayla Togneri (Ventura Calif./Ventura) totaled a career-high 17 rebounds on the night while first year forward
Cat Terres (Saint Michael, Minn./Monticello) locked down the paint with five big time blocks.
St. Olaf scored the first points of the game but Barraza answered with a layup to make the game 2-2. Podoll then hit a jumper to give Macalester a lead that they were able to maintain for the remainder of the game. The Scots finished the first quarter up 16-10 on the Olies.
The Scots continued to apply pressure and capitalize on mistakes in the second quarter. Macalester was able to take a commanding 35-21 lead into half time. With a little over two minutes into the third quarter, the Scots took their biggest lead of the night making the score 39-21.
Macalester led 48-38 going into the fourth quarter. The Olies hit a few big shots in the fourth quarter to draw closer but the Scots were able to pull away and secure the 63-56 victory.
Macalester will face off with St. Olaf one more time to close out the 2021 spring season on April 13 at St. Olaf College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
