St. Peter, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team traveled to St. Peter, for their seventh game of the season, to take on Gustavus Adolphus. The game was a back-and-forth battle, but ultimately the Gusties prevailed over the Scots 71-63. The Scots are now 3-4 (1-3 MIAC).
Senior guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) earned the first points of the game for the Scots with 8:47 on the clock. The Gusties would answer back with two points of their own a minute and a half later. The lead would change a few times in the next four minutes, until first year guard/forward
Peyton Starks' (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) layup tied the game at 10 with 3:37 left in the quarter. The Gusties then went on a 6-4 run to end the quarter just two points ahead, 16-14. In the second quarter, the Gusties seemed to find their stride, going on a 10-2 run to begin the second. The Scots continued to push on, with Starks making a pair of free throws to bring the Gusties lead to eight, with 4:24 in the half remaining. Despite the Scots defensive efforts, the Gusties continued to find the basket, going up as much as 15 in the quarter. The Scots went into the break down, 39-24.
The Scots battled hard in the third quarter to decrease Gustavus' lead. It was again the senior guard, Sabbagh who put up a layup and three-pointer to bring the Scots within 12. With 6:31 on the clock, the Gusties made their own three-pointer to go back up 15. The next two and half minutes belonged to junior guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) who made two three-pointers and a jump shot to keep the Scots within 12. The Scots were able to decrease the Gusties lead to eight by the end of the third, with a jumper from sophomore guard
Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./North Andover). In the fourth, the Scots would come within seven points of the Gusties multiple times. However, the Gusties' precision was too much for the Scots, and they fell 63-71.
Sabbagh led the team tonight with a total of 22 points, followed by Cushing with 13. Junior forward
Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) registered 10 defensive rebounds and 12 total on the day. The Scots went 25-for-53 on field goals and 8-for-11 on free throws.
Macalester's next game is Wednesday, Dec. 8, where the Scots will host St. Scholastica. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
