St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played their eighth game of the season tonight in a conference matchup against St. Scholastica. The Scots defeated the Saints 69-48. The Scots are now 4-4 (2-3 MIAC).
The first quarter started with the Saints going up four within the first three minutes of the game. The Scots answered quickly though, going on a 10-0 run for the next two and a half minutes, kicked off with a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School). Macalester went up 10-4 with 4:33 left in the quarter. Senior guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) would add five points in that run and an additional two points in the quarter, bringing Macalester's total, and the Scots would take a 15-11 lead into the first break.
Junior guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) opened the second quarter with a three-pointer off an assist from first year guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep). This was the start of a 9-4 run for the Scots, also seeing a three-pointer made from first year guard
Catherine Driver (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale). The rest of the half was back and forth between the Saints and the Scots. A quick shot at the end of the half saw the Saints close Macalester's lead to seven, 33-26.
First year guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) opened the scoring for the Scots, 30 seconds into the half. The Scots would go on a 9-4 run again where junior forward
Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) would tally five of those nine. Up six, with 8:36 on the clock, the Scots went on a large run, outscoring the Saints 16-7. LaFrenz would add five more points while Sabbagh and Cushing would each add four, to end the quarter 51-33.
The fourth was very back-and-forth, but also saw multiple Scots get in on the scoring. Norquist would add six, Starks would add three to her tally for the night, and first year guard
Camille Samuel (Lutz, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) would add four. The Scots would go on to win 69-48 over the Saints.
Cushing led the offense with 14 points. Starks registered 12, with Sabbagh right behind at 11. From the bench, the Scots scored 24, including a three-pointer from first year guard
Jessica Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis). The Scots field goal percentage tonight was 39.7%.
Macalester's next game is Saturday, Dec. 11. The Scots will close out 2021 with a conference matchup against Saint Benedict, in the Leonard Center. Tipoff is at 1:00 p.m.
