St. Paul, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team played their sixth game of the season tonight in a non-conference matchup against Crown College. The Scots took the victory 63-52. The Scots are now 3-3 (1-2 MIAC).
Junior forward
Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) got the game rolling for the Scots making a layup off an assist from first year guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep). The Storm quickly put points on the board, going on a 9-2 run to take the lead with 2:34 left in the quarter. Macalester answered back though and with a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School), a jumper from junior guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South), and a pair of defensive rebounds from sophomore guard
Maia Pedrosa (South San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco), Macalester tied the game at nine.
The Scots took control in the second half going on a 12-3 run to for the first four minutes. Senior guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) registered six of those 12 points that saw the Scots up nine with 5:28 on the clock. Crown would not give up and picked up a three-pointer and a few jumpers to bring the score going into the half, 29-25 in favor of the Scots. LaFrenz registered seven rebounds in the quarter (four defensive, three offensive).
The third quarter saw the Storm create more offensive attack and take the lead away from the Scots, going on a 13-6 run to lead by three with 5:40 left in the quarter. The Scots would not be deterred and held the Storm scoreless for the remainder of the quarter. LaFrenz would put up seven of Macalester's next twelve points and rebound the ball six times to bring the Scots up nine going into the fourth.
LaFrenz again started the scoring off for the Scots with a layup a minute into the final quarter. Sabbagh then made a three-pointer to give the Scots a 52-40 lead with 7:05 remaining in the game. The final seven minutes were back-and-forth between the Scots and the Storm. However, the Scots came out on top 63-52. With nine more added to her total in the final 10 minutes, LaFrenz ended the night with 24 rebounds.
LaFrenz came out of tonight's game with a double-double, registering 23 points and 24 rebounds. Sabbagh tallied 17 points on the night and first year guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) scored 12. The Scots went 9-16 on free throws for the night.
Macalester's next game is Saturday, Dec. 4, where the Scots will travel to St. Peter to play Gustavus Adolphus in a MIAC matchup. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
