Women’s Basketball: Macalester Drops Tough Road Contest to St. Olaf

Northfield, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team traveled to Northfield this evening to take on MIAC opponent, St. Olaf. Despite their best efforts, the Scots fell short 67-86. Macalester is now 2-3 (1-2 MIAC).

To start the game, the Scots went on a 5-0 run, with two made free throws from first year guard/forward Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) and a three-pointer from sophomore guard Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School). The Oles answered back, making it a very back-and-forth game. The Scots were up as much as seven points in the quarter, 21-14, off a layup from junior forward Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) with 1:41 left in the quarter. Another layup from LaFrenz at the end of the quarter pushed the Scots to a one-point lead into the break.

LaFrenz opened the Scots scoring for the second quarter with a pair of free throws and scored four-out-of-six points for the Scots to tie the game at 29 with 7:03 on the clock. Norquist put up two points to give the Scots the lead. However, the Oles took control after that, outscoring the Scots 20-6, ending the half with a score of 49-37 in favor of St. Olaf.

In the third, senior guard Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) and junior guard Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) set the tone for the Scots combining for 10 points and bringing the Scots within nine of St. Olaf. However, the Oles quickly got a basket and returned to a double-digit lead. Starting with a free throw from LaFrenz, the Scots would go on a 5-0 run to bring themselves within six points with 2:12 left in the quarter. The Oles bounced back however, maintaining a double-digit lead into the break, 67-53. The Scots continued to press for a rally in the fourth quarter, with Norquist scoring eight points in the final 10 minutes. Despite their best efforts, the Oles pulled away with an 86-67 win over the Scots.

Norquist was on fire tonight, leading the team in scoring with a season high 20 points. Sabbagh and Cushing each had 12 on the night while LaFrenz had 11. LaFrenz also registered nine total rebounds against the Oles. The Scots went 18-22 on free throws for the night.

Macalester's next game is Thursday, Dec. 2, where the Scots will host Crown College in their last non-conference game of the season. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
