Moorhead, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team travelled to Moorhead to play Concordia in a MIAC matchup tonight. The Scots took the victory 58-46. Macalester is now 2-2 (1-1 MIAC).
The first quarter started with each team getting their footing on the court. The Scots sophomore guard
Andrea Palmen (Kenosha, Wis./The Prairie School) opened the scoring with a layup just under two minutes in. The Cobbers then went on a 10-2 run. The Scots answered back with a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Caitlin Panos (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), at the end of the quarter, to cut the Cobbers lead to 10-7.
In the second quarter, senior guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) registered nine points, going three-for-four on field goals and making a three-pointer. With 1:29 left in the half, first year guard/forward
Peyton Starks (St. Louis, MO./John Burroughs School) made a fast break layup to tie the game at 24. Junior guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) knocked in a free throw towards the end of the quarter, to give the Scots a one-point lead going into the break.
The third quarter was very back-and-forth. After just under two minutes of play in the third, the Cobbers had tied the game at 29. However, a three-pointer from Palmen saw the Scots retake the lead and maintain it for the rest of the game. The fourth quarter saw the Scots put up 18 points, starting with two three-pointers, one from Cushing and one from Palmen. First year guard/forward
Katherine Norquist (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) went two-for-two free throws, while Cushing went four-for-four to round out the night with a 58-46 win over Concordia.
Sabbagh led the team overall with 17 points, followed by Cushing with 10. On the other side of the court, junior forward
Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) totaled 13 defensive rebounds. Sabbagh and Cushing each had five defensive rebounds. The Scots shot 91.7% from the free throw line and went five-for-twelve on three-pointers.
Macalester returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 30, where the Scots will travel to Northfield to take on St. Olaf. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
