Women’s Soccer: Macalester Loses Close Match with Saint Benedict, 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team battled one of the top teams in the MIAC but ultimately fell, 1-0 to Saint Benedict in a MIAC match Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The loss drops the Scots to 10-4-2 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play, while the Bennies improve to 8-3-3, 6-1-2 MIAC.

Saint Benedict scored the only goal they would need in the sixth minute, when Clara Noack headed home a corner kick from Grace Navara for a 1-0 lead. Macalester pushed for the equalizer but managed only one shot on goal by senior Carolyn Eckstein (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) the rest of the way.

Senior goalkeeper Dana Gustafson (Ames, Iowa/Ames) registered six saves, as the Bennies outshot the Scots, 17-2 for the match.

Before the game, Macalester honored its seniors Eckstein, Gustafson, Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), Hannah Conner (Madison, Wis./Madison West), Zoe Kross (Queen Creek, Ariz./Basha), Isabella Light (Chicago, Ill./Univ. of Chicago Laboratory Schools), Paige Robertson (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Amber Sofge (New York, N.Y./The New York City Museum School).

Macalester plays its final regular-season home game on Wednesday, Oct. 27 against Saint Mary's University. The MIAC game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
