ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team played another close MIAC match at home and came out on top with a four-set victory over St. Scholastica Saturday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots, who won by scores of 29-27, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, are now 12-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play, while the Saints drop to 2-9, 2-5 MIAC.
Each set was closely contested, with the outcome not decided until late. Macalester started the first set off in a 6-0 hole, only to battle back to lead 23-21. The Scots had to fend off three set points before closing out the set on a kill by sophomore
Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) for the 29-27 win. The Saints had two set points denied by Macalester in the second set before coming through with a 25-23 win. Macalester controlled the third set most of the way but had to tally the final three points to put St. Scholastica away, 25-20.
The fourth set remained close throughout, with the Saints maintaining a slight lead. Trailing 20-18, Macalester notched five straight points, including kills by junior
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) and first year
Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen), to lead 23-20. The Saints tallied the next three points to tie the score at 23-23, but King, then Wooten, put kills away to seal the victory, 25-23.
King had another outstanding all-around match with 19 kills and 20 digs. Wooten registered a career-high 14 kills and a .278 hitting percentage, while Geber hit .345 and had 12 kills to go with four blocks. First year
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) delivered a career-best 57 assists and had 14 digs. Defensively, first year
Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) turned in a solid performance with a team-best 23 digs, while first year
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) added 15 digs along with eight kills. Caitlin Schneewies led the Saints with 15 kills.
The Scots return to action on Friday, Oct. 22 with a MIAC match at Saint Mary's. The match begins at 7:00 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
