WINONA, Minn.- The Macalester College men's tennis team won its first conference match of the season 9-0 over Saint Mary's University. The Scots improve to an unblemished 4-0 (1-0 MIAC) while SMU falls to 5-4 (0-3 MIAC).
In doubles play, junior
Sam Hochberger (Maple Grove, Minn./ Maple Grove) and Sophomore
Karsten Knutsen Minneapolis, Minn./Riverfield Country Day (Okla.) won their match 8-3 in the No. 1 slot. Sophomore
Jeffrey Jorgensen Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and first year
Josh Marine (Honolulu, Hawaii/Summit) grinded out an 8-6 win in the No.2 position. Junior
Ben White Parkersburg, W. Va./Analy) and first year
Matthew Sullivan (Tacoma, Wash./Weil) rounded out doubles play with an 8-4 victory over their opponents.
In singles play, No.1 Hochberger won (6-4) and (6-0) in two straight sets. No. 2 Jorgensen and No. 3 Knutsen also won their matches in two straight sets. No. 4 White played well and won (6-2) and (6-2) in his match. No. 5 Sullivan shut his opponent out while No. 6 first year
Anton Korolev (Moscow, Russia/ Weilwon) kept Smiley to just two points in both sets.
Macalester will take a break from conference play and travel to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to take on University of Wisconsin Eau Claire March 6 at 7:00 p.m.
