Moorhead, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team lost a competitive road game after only trailing Concordia Moorhead 41-40 leading into the fourth quarter. The Scots ended up dropping the road game 64-48 to the Cobber's. Macalester is now 1-23 (0-19 MIAC) after tonight's loss while Concordia improves to 11-13 (9-10 MIAC).
Junior guard
Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard Westlake) scored the first points of the game after both teams came up short on a few possessions. A few minutes later, the Scots took a 7-5 lead after junior forward
Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tampalpais) knocked down a three pointer. Two free throws from senior guard
Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) increased the Macalester lead to 9-5. With just over two minutes left, the Cobbers tied the game at nine with two free throws. After a missed three pointer from the Scots, Concordia made a three of their own to regain the lead and make the score 12-9. Concordia took a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.
Sowerby started the second quarter off by making a layup and bringing the Scots within one point. Shortly after, the Cobbers jumped out to a 20-14 lead. The Scots clawed back and made the score 27-26 after Barraza nailed a three pointer. The Scots only trailed Concordia 29-26 heading into half time.
After Concordia jumped out to a five point lead, Barraza responded by making it a one possession game with 8:13 left in the third quarter. With the Cobbers up 33-31, the team made a few more shots and extended the lead to 39-33. Before the third quarter came to an end, first year guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) drained a three ball to make the score 41-40 Concordia.
Over the course of the fourth quarter, the Cobbers got hot on offense and built their lead all the way up to 18 points at one point. The Scots continued to fight but could not dig themselves out of the hole. Ultimately, Macalester fell 64-48 despite only being a few possessions away from taking the lead for much of the game.
Barraza led the Scots with 13 points, while going 3-of-8 from deep. Sowerby also tallied nine points, three assists, and four rebounds on the night.
Macalester will finish the season on the road at St. Olaf College Feb. 22 at 3:00 p.m.
