Women’s Basketball: Scots Fall in Shootout to No. 24 Augsburg University

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team lost its high scoring affair with Augsburg Saturday afternoon. Boot teams scored a combined 184 points but the nationally ranked Auggies came out on top. The Scots fall to 1-22 (0-18 MIAC), while Augsburg improves to 20-3 (16-2 MIAC).
 
After Augsburg made the first basket of the game, sophomore guard Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) answered by putting two points on the board with a jumper. Soon, the Auggies jumped out to a 15-4 lead behind strong shooting. The Scots cut into the deficit but trailed 31-13 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Junior forward Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) made a layup to make the score 34-15 early on in the second quarter. Early in the second quarter, both teams entered the bonus and shot 23 combined free throws. The Auggies went 11-of-15 at the line during the second quarter while the Scots went 5-of-8 at the line during the second quarter. Macalester trailed 58-38 going into halftime.
 
Over the course of the third quarter, Augsburg outscored Macalester 28-12 and took an 86-50 lead into the fourth quarter. During the fourth quarter both teams traded baskets and the Scots outscored the Auggies 27-21. First year Emma LaFrenz (Edina, Minn./Edina) took over the fourth quarter and scored eight points to rally the Scots. Despite scoring more during the fourth quarter, Macalester fell at the hands of Augsburg 107-77.
 
Four Scots scored in double digits to help the offense pour in a season high 77 points. Junior guard Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard Westlake) led the Scots offensively with 22 points, four assists, and two rebounds. Barraza also added four steals. Sabbagh was not far behind with 15 points, three rebounds, and one assist. LaFrez came off the bench and exploded for 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Podoll also tallied 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
 
The Scots resume MIAC play Wednesday, February 19, as the team hits the road to take on Concordia College (Minn.), tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
