ST. JOSEPH, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team fell on the road to Saint Benedict College despite a strong night offensively from sophomore guard
Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis). The Scots fall are now 1-21 (0-17 MIAC) after tonight's loss. Saint Benedict improves to 11-11 (7-10 MIAC) after defeating Macalester.
Sabbagh put the Scots on the board with a layup after CSB jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Scots took a 12-11 lead with about 3:18 left in the first quarter after junior forward
Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) drained a three pointer. Macalester took a 17-16 lead into the second quarter.
Junior forward
Kayla Togneri (Ventura Calif./Ventura) scored the first points of the second quarter to make the score 23-19 in favor of CSB. Shortly after, the Macalester offense stalled and Saint Benedict took a 39-27 lead into half time.
Junior guard
Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais)
made a jump shot to make the score 41-29 a few minutes into the third quarter. The Scots pulled to within 10 points before CSB went on a 16-2 run to take a 61-37 lead into the fourth quarter. First year guard
Solana Cushing (Minneapolis, Minn./South) started off the fourth quarter with a three pointer on the Scots first possession of the last quarter. The Macalester offense put up 21 points in the final quarter of the game but Saint Benedict continued to widen its lead and ultimately won 83-58.
Sabbagh poured in 19 points for the Scots and went 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Podoll also had a big night offensively with 14 points, seven rebounds, one block, and one steal off the bench.
Macalester will return to the Leonard Center for the final home game of the 2019-20 season. The Scots will take on No. 24 Augsburg University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15.
