Men’s Basketball: Macalester Opens 2020 with Loss at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a MIAC game at Carleton College, 68-54 Saturday afternoon at West Gym. The Scots fall to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference, while the Knights improve to 5-6, 2-4 MIAC.

In the first half, Carleton built an 18-11 lead over the first 10 minutes of the game. Macalester came within one point after a basket by senior guard Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) made the score 21-20 with 5:20 on the clock. A pair of threes by Carleton helped the Knights close out the half on a 10-6 run to take a 31-26 edge into the halftime break.

Seven points from junior forward Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) sparked a 9-4 Macalester run to start the second half that tied the score at 35-35. Carleton responded by scoring the next 10 points as a part of a 13-2 spree that put the Knights on top, 48-37 with 12 minutes left. The Scots came as close at eight points twice the rest of the way, as the hosts led by as many as 17 points en route to a 14-point win. Macalester held a 31-27 rebounding edge but committed 14 turnovers that resulted in 22 Carleton points.

Henningfield tallied 22 points and seven rebounds to lead the Scots. Sophomore guard Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) added nine points, four rebounds and two steals, while sophomore center Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) contributed eight points and six boards. Kent Hanson paced the Knights with 18 points.

Macalester returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 8 to host Concordia College in another MIAC contest. Game time is set for 5:15 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
