Men’s Basketball: Macalester Holds Off Concordia for MIAC Victory, 74-70

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore guard Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) scored 17 points, and the Macalester College men's basketball team held off a late three-point barrage to defeat Concordia College, 74-70 Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The MIAC win gives the Scots an overall record of 5-7, including a 2-5 mark in conference play, while the Cobbers drop to 2-10, 0-8 MIAC.

Six points from junior guard Tyler McFarland (Denver, Colo./New Hampton School) and four from Sathy helped Macalester start the game on a 15-4 run. Concordia came within six, 21-15 before McFarland and junior forward Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) hit threes to spark a half-ending 15-5 spree that made the halftime score 36-20 Scots. McFarland scored 13 points, as Macalester shot 55.2 percent from the floor while holding the Cobbers to 29.0 percent shooting in the first half.

An 8-4 run to open the second half, including four points from sophomore center Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies), gave the Scots their largest lead, 44-22 with 17:12 remaining. The bulge was 21, 58-37 with 9:01 to play when Concordia used a barrage of three-pointers to get back in the game. Braeton Motschenbach drained five threes and Bryden Urie hit three more, as the Cobbers closed out the game by outscoring Macalester, 33-16 over the final nine minutes. But it was not enough to prevent the Scots from ending a four-game losing streak and earning their second league win of the season.

Macalester ended up shooting 50.9 percent from the field for the game while posting a 37-32 edge in rebounding. Sathy finished with 17 points in 27 minutes to lead the Scots. McFarland tied his season high with 15 points, while Henningfield grabbed a season-best 15 boards to go with 13 points. Junior guard Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) added 12 points and three assists, and Anderson registered his third double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Urie had 20 points and Motschenbach made 6-of-7 from beyond the arc to pace Concordia.

Macalester continues MIAC play with a conference game at Augsburg on Saturday, Jan. 11. The opening tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn.
