COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team lost a MIAC game on the road to second-ranked Saint John's University, 90-60 Monday night at Sexton Arena. Junior forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) scored 25 point for the Scots, who are now 5-11 overall and 2-9 in league play. The Johnnies (15-1) remain unbeaten in the MIAC with an 11-0 record.
Macalester opened the game with a 9-2 run, with Henningfield tallying five points. After Saint John's responded with a 10-2 run to lead 12-11, the Scots came back to tie the score three times, including 18-18 with 12 minutes left in the first half. Saint John's took control of the game by outscoring Macalester, 28-13 over the remainder of the half to take a 46-31 advantage into the halftime break. The Scots shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half but allowed the Johnnies to shoot 55.9 percent.
In the second half, Macalester was able to cut the deficit to 14 points three different times, the last time being at the 13:34 mark following a three from Henningfield and a basket by junior guard
Tyler McFarland (Denver, Colo./New Hampton School) that made the score 59-45. Later in the half, a layup by sophomore guard
Lucas Leiter (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) made the score 65-50 before Saint John's went on a 10-0 run for a 75-50 bulge with seven minutes left. The final push helped the Johnnies close out their 15th consecutive win.
Macalester committed a season-low five turnovers and had a season-best six blocks, but the Scots were outscored in the paint, 58-26, and Saint John's enjoyed a 42-21 rebounding advantage.
Henningfield shot 10-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, en route to 25 points, his best against a MIAC opponent this season. McFarland scored a season-high 15 points for the fifth time this year, while sophomore center
Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) registered six rebounds and three blocks. Junior guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado), who ranks third in the MIAC in assists per game (4.5), delivered five assists to go with six points. Lucas Walford paced Saint John's with 17 points.
Macalester returns home to host ninth-ranked St. Thomas on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
