Baseball: Macalester Sweeps Carleton in MIAC Finale

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team closed out the MIAC schedule by scoring 24 runs and recording 30 hits in a pair of victories over Carleton College Saturday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The Scots, who won by scores of 10-2 and 14-4, improve to 19-18 overall and 10-10 in the conference to finish in sixth place. The Knights drop to 12-21, 7-13 MIAC.

In the first game, first year Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School) put on a show, hitting three doubles and a three-run home run en route to seven runs batted in. He doubled home junior Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) for the game's first run in the second, then delivered a two-run double in the third. Then in the fifth, Roe blasted his team-leading seventh homer with Francalangia and first year Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) on base to make the score 7-0. After Carleton scored a run in the sixth, senior Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) doubled to plate sophomore Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) and later scored on an error. Still in the sixth, Roe recorded his third double of the game to drive in Francalangia and make the score 10-1. The Knights scored an unearned run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Junior pitcher Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) held Carleton hitless through five innings, eventually allowing a single and a run in the sixth. He finished with nine strikeouts while walking one in six innings of work. Francalangia went 3-for-3 with four runs and an RBI, while senior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and first year Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) also had two hits apiece.

In Game 2, Carleton opened the game with a single and a double to take an early 1-0 lead. The Scots responded with a three-run home run by Moreno in the third and a two-run blast from Helton in the fourth for a 5-1 lead. The Knights mounted a comeback with three runs in the fifth to make it a one-run game, 5-4. In the seventh, Macalester pulled away with nine runs to make the score 14-4 and end the game due to the conference's 10-run rule in the second game of a doubleheader. Moreno batted twice in the inning and drove in three runs, while Low, Sahargun, Goldberg and senior Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes)  each had RBIs in the inning.

Moreno finished the game with six RBIs while going 3-for-5 at the plate. Helton delivered three hits, while Sahargun, Goldberg, Low and Abelson had two hits apiece in the victory. First year Will Moscato (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief without allowing a baserunner to earn the win.

Between games, the Scots recognized seniors Abelson, Goldberg, Low, Zach Anderson (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and Thomas Shogren (Woodbury, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) and their families as a part of Senior Day.

Macalester wraps up the 2019 season on Monday, May 6 with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Northwestern. The first game starts at 2:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
