ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team played its first home games of the 2019 season on Saturday, losing a pair of MIAC contests to Concordia College, 4-2 and 9-1 at Nicholson Field. The Scots fall to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while the Cobbers improve to 9-11, 3-3 MIAC.
In the first game, Concordia took the early lead on a two-run home run by Alec Sames in the top of the first inning. First year
Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School) answered for Macalester in the bottom of the first with his MIAC-leading fifth home run of the season to make the score 2-1. Then in the second, senior
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) singled home first year
Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) to tie the score at 2-2. The Cobbers scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 advantage.
Junior pitcher
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) started and gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking one in five innings of work. Junior
Jacob Simpson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll) tossed two scoreless innings of relief. Abelson and first year
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each had two hits.
In Game 2, Concordia scored a run in the top of the first and two more in the fourth before exploding for six runs in the sixth for a 9-0 lead. Macalester tallied its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, when sophomore
Sam Rosevear (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) belted a solo home run to make the score 9-1. The Cobbers tacked on another four runs in the eighth and closed out the sweep.
First year
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) recorded two of the Scots' seven hits. Sophomore
Will Madairy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits while fanning six and walking two to take the loss.
Macalester plays another MIAC doubleheader at home on Tuesday, April 9 against Augsburg College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
