MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team swept Concordia College- Moorhead today with two wins. The Scots beat the Cobbers 9-6 and then 6-1.
The Scots took a 4-0 lead by the top of the fifth inning. First year Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) scored the Scots first run on a single by sophomore Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove). Then in the fourth, Meade hit a double RBI single to advance sophomore Molly Hurley (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and junior Elena Youngdale (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Paul Academy). The fourth run was scored by sophomore Olive Tambou (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) after first year Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) hit a double to center field.
The Cobbers scored three runs to make the game 4-3 but in the top of the sixth inning Macalester took control and scored six more runs. The scoring run began with Meade on third base after junior Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) hit a double. Sophomore Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) hit a single bunt to advance Meade. Carpenter then scored a run off of a single from senior Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont). Up 6-3,first year Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) hit an RBI single to send Kechely home. Then to make the lead 9-3, Bergin doubled to left field for two runs by Clarke and O'Connor. Despite the Cobbers scoring three runs in the last two innings, the Scots won 9-6.
In the second win against Concordia, the score was 1-1 going into the fifth inning. Junior Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield) advanced Carpenter with hit to the Concordia shortstop. In the top of the fifth, Meade hit a double to get on base and then continued her run to home off a Concordia error.
Up 2-1, the Scots scored four more runs in the final two innings to seal the win. Bergin began the scoring with a triple to center field that advanced Tambou home. Bergin then scored off a double from sophomore Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie). First year Anna Leidner (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) the pinch ran for Lawhead and scored when sophomore Molly Hurley (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) singled to center field. O'Connor scored the final run of the night when Bergin hit a single up the middle. The Scots won 6-1 in their first MIAC sweep of the year.
On top of her five hits on the day, Meade threw all seven innings of the second game with 10 strikeouts, a season high. Senior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) pitched the entire first game and had a season-high 11 strikeouts.
The Scots play Saturday, Apr. 6, against Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minn.
