NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College softball lost to St. Olaf today in a doubleheader. The Scots fell 4-3 and then 9-5 to the Olies.
In the first game, the Olies scored one run in the first and three in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Scots mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth with three runs. With sophomore Olive Tambou (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) on first, junior
Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) hit a bunt single to get on base. Macalester then loaded the bases when Tabmou and Carpenter advanced and sophomore
Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) got on third with a single to right field. Tambou then scored off of a wild pitch by the Olies to make the score 4-1. Then sophomore
Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) hit a double-RBI single to advance Kechely and Carpenter.
But the Scots were unable to complete the comeback however and the game finished 4-3 in favor of St. Olaf. Senior pitcher Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) threw six innings with four strikeouts.
In the second game, Macalester fell behind 4-0 in the first inning but came back with two runs in the third. Sophomore Molly Hurley (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) singled to center field and then advanced to second when Kechely was hit by a pitch and put on first. Hurley and Kechely were sent home as junior
Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield) hit a double to left center.
With the game at 4-2, St. Olaf tallied a five-run inning in the fifth to go up 9-2. Macalester made a go at it in the top of the seventh and scored three runs. Tambou, who went 2-3 at the plate for the day, hit a single to left field. She then advanced to second as Carpenter reached first on bunt. After senior Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) was walked to load the bases for the Scots, Meade hit her second double-RBI single of the day to advance Tambou and Carpenter home.
Macalester scored their last run of the day when sophomore Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) hit a double down the left-field line to send O'Connor home. The St. Olaf pitcher closed out the game and beat Macalester 9-5.
Macalester returns to play on Monday, April 22, against the No. 4 ranked University of St.Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
