Softball: Macalester Splits with No. 21 St. Ben's

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team faced the College of Saint Benedict at the CSB Softball Complex on Tuesday. The Scots beat the 21st-ranked Bennies in Game 1, 4-3 before falling in the second game, 4-1.

The Scots beat the Bennies 4-3 in the first game of the doubleheader. Saint Ben's took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Macalester then scored two runs in the top of the third as first year Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) and junior Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) both scored on an error with the bases loaded.

Down 3-2, the Scots then scored one run in the fifth. Junior Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield) reached first on a fielder's choice and then came home on a triple by senior Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) to tie the score at 3-3. Then in the top of the seventh, Jackson and O'Connor hit back-to-back, two-out doubles to take a 4-3 lead. The Bennies had the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but senior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) struck out the next batter and induced a groundout to end the game.

In the loss to the Bennies the Scots fell behind 1-0 only to tie the game in the third. But in the bottom of the fifth Saint Benedict scored three runs that were answered by the Scots and Macalester lost 4-1.

Migacz
pitched 12 innings between both games with six strikeouts. Migacz is fourth in the MIAC in strikeouts.

The Scots play another MIAC doubleheader on the road on Wednesday, Apr. 3 at Concordia College. The first game begins at 4:00 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
