ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team split with Hamline University today in the Scots first conference doubleheader of the season.
In the first game, the Scots lost 1-0 to the Pipers. But Macalester found an offensive momentum in the second game and won 4-3.
The second game remained scoreless until the Pipers scored 3 runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Scots then answered with three runs of their own to tie the game. Sophomore Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) hit a two-run single to send first year
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) and senior
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) home. Then sophomore
Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) hit a single to advance senior
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) for the tying run.
Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the seventh when the Scots came away with the win. After Macalester loaded the bases, junior Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield) stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off single RBI to send Migacz home and win the game.
Migacz threw all 14 innings of both games with five strikeouts and 12 runless innings.
The Scots go on the road Tuesday, Apr. 2, against the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn.
