CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball defeated Albright College 9-2 today. In the afternoon, the Scots fell to Manchester University to end day two of their spring trip. For the second day in a row, junior Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) led the Scots in runs and was 6-7 at bat. She also now leads the MIAC with 11 stolen bases.
In the win over the Lions, Macalester took a firm lead by the second inning with a 5-0 run against Albright. Carpenter scored the Scots first run of the day. Then with the bases loaded, junior
Elena Youngdale (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Paul Academy) was sent home as sophomore
Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) was walked. Junior
Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield) then doubled Carpenter and senior
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) home.
Jackson is tied for first in the MIAC for runs batted in with 14.
Albright answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-2. But Macalester secured the win with another four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. With first year Anna Leidner (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) on second and senior Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) on first, first year
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) hit a double to send Leidner to home plate.
Sophomore Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) then stepped up to bat and hit a double to left field, advancing Clarke home and making the score 7-2. Kechely singled both sophomore
Emily Cekander (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) and Meade home to end the scoring for the Scots.
Cekander through four innings in the game with three strikeouts, two coming in the seventh inning to see out the win.
The Scots continued play against Manchester University. Macalester found themselves down 6-4 going into the sixth inning with two runs from Kechely, one from O'Connor and Carpenter. Manchester added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Scots looked to be making a comeback as O'Connor singled Carpenter home, quickly followed by a run from Jackson as Clarke hit a single. But Manchester saw the game out and the Scots lost 8-6.
The Scots return Tuesday, Mar. 19, against the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point and Lawrence University in Claremont, Fla.
