Softball: Macalester Comes Back To Beat Lawrence, Falls to Stevens Point

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball went one and one today on the third day of the team's spring trip.

Macalester had a big comeback win against Lawrence University today to beat the Vikings 9-8 in eight innings. Down 7-3 in the fifth inning, the Scots began their rally with a hit by senior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) to get herself on first base. Migacz advanced to second as junior Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) was walked by the Vikings' pitcher. Sophomore Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) then sent Migacz and Carpenter home with a bunt.

With the score 7-5, Migacz and the Scots defense kept the Vikings from scoring in the top of the sixth. Macalester tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With first year Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) on first and junior Elena Youngdale (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Paul Academy) on second base, sophomore Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) hit a double to left field to send Clarke and Youngdale to home plate and tied the game 7-7.

Neither team was able to score in the seventh inning sending the game to extra innings. Lawrence scored one run in the eighth to force Macalester to score in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Clarke hit a double to center field to start the Scots off and was followed by Lawhead, who was walked. Both runners advanced and then Migacz singled Clarke for the game-tying run. Then for the win, Carpenter hit the game-winning RBI to send Lawhead home to defeat the Vikings 9-8.

The Scots lost earlier in the day, 9-8, to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Kechely led the Scots with two runs and hit 2-3 at the plate and first year Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) had three runs batted in during the loss.

In pitching, Migacz went 1-1 on the day and had seven strikeouts which puts her in third in strikeouts in the MIAC with 43 on the year.

The Scots have an off day tomorrow and return to play Thursday, Mar. 19, against the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point and Lawrence University in Claremont, Fla.
