Women's Basketball: Scots Win Streak Snapped At Augsburg

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost to Augsburg University, second in the MIAC,  75-62 tonight. Sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) tallied 27 points, tying her career high as a Scot.

The Auggies jumped ahead quick, up 9-0 with 7:13 to play in the first quarter. But then Barraza started the Scots off with a three-pointer. Barraza shot 50 percent from beyond the arc for the game. Despite the Auggies' lead, the Scots went end to end with Augsburg for the rest of the period. Barraza then finished the quarter for Macalester with a layup to make the score 21-18.

In the second, the teams continued to play evenly and the Auggies were unable to pull away more than three points ahead of the Scots. Much of the Scots ability to score was aided by sophomore Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) who had 10 rebounds on the night. With just over two minutes to go in the half, Barraza hit two free throws to make the Auggies' lead one point. The teams went into halftime 36-33.

Out of the break, the Scots were unable to contain the Augsburg offense and the Auggies finished the third period up 56-45.  Then in the fourth, Augsburg hit four three-pointers to run away with the game and win 75-62.

The Scots will finish the season on the road on Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Catherine University at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
